What is a frost-protected safety shower?
Frost-protected safety showers have been developed for use in industry, e.g. outdoors. These are specially designed safety devices that are immediately ready for use even at sub-zero temperatures and enable fast and effective first aid in the event of skin contact with hazardous substances. These are mandatory first aid facilities for workplaces where employees may come into contact with hazardous substances, acids, alkalis, heat, flames and also extreme dirt. The restricted, even and, most important of all, soft water jet has been optimized for rinsing chemicals out of the eye and rinsing off on the body.
What are the specifics of frost-protected safety shower?
Frost-protected safety showers use technical solutions such as self-regulating trace heating cables to ensure that the water in the pipes does not freeze and that a sufficient amount of water is available at all times. The integrated thermostat functions as an energy-saving circuit and switches off the trace heating from an outside temperature of +11°C. When temperatures drop, the trace heating is switched on from an outside temperature of +4°C. The showers are also equipped with additional insulation so that they are ready for use even in extremely cold conditions. This function of the safety showers prevents the water from freezing and the shower from not working when required.
The safety showers are life-saving devices that are installed in areas with low temperatures to enable immediate and thorough rinsing of the body in the event of accidents involving hazardous substances. Freezing of these showers is not possible even in extreme conditions.
Installation and operation of the frost-protected safety shower
The safety shower is covered with stainless steel sheets on the outside. This ensures maximum durability even in harsh industrial environments. The modular design with bolted valve covers ensures easy access to valves and connecting parts for maintenance work. Concealed high-performance shower heads prevent vandalism damage and also deliver high flow rates for rapid decontamination. Triggering is via stainless steel pull rods or foot controls such as kick plates or foot levers.

What standards apply to frost-protected safety shower?
Frost-protected safety showers comply with the standards EN 15154-1:2006 (Body showers in laboratories), EN 15154-5:2019 (Body showers for locations other than laboratories / replacement for DIN 12899-3:2009) and ANSI Z358.1-2014.. Showers with integrated eye shower additionally comply the EN 15154-2:2006 and in USA the ANSI Z358.1-2014. Further national standards may have to be observed. In addition, company standards may need to be considered when selecting an frost-protected safety shower.
